The Michael Mester Group
The current lineup of the Michael Mester Group is Kutztown University students Keith Rippey (piano) and Michael Mester (drums). Keith has played extensively in the Baltimore area as a solo and combo performer and has studied with Greg Hatza and Charles Covington, the former Chairman of the Department of Music at Howard University in Washington, D.C. Michael studies with John Riley and performs with the Kutztown University Big Band. He is also a member of the Kutztown University Rock ensemble which has won multiple Downbeat awards (Undergraduate College Outstanding Performance in Blues/Rock/Pop 2018 and 2019).
The unique instrumentation of the Michael Mester Group allows it the freedom and flexibility to delve into the nuances and explore the permutations of what Dr. BIlly Taylor calls, "America's Classical Music." For its Third Thursday performance the group will focus on some of jazz's overlooked and underappreciated composers including Scott LaFaro, Dave Brubeck and Horace Silver. Works by more familiar names - including Duke Ellington and Antonio Carlos Jobim - will also be featured but in keeping with the spirit of the evening the musicians will focus on the forgotten gems from the canons of these two preeminent jazz icons.
