ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION AND JOB SUMMARY:

The Allentown Symphony Association (ASA) operates the Allentown Symphony Orchestra (ASO), El Sistema Lehigh Valley (ESLV), and is the owner/operator of Miller Symphony Hall in downtown Allentown, PA. Since 1951, the ASO has been the premiere professional symphony orchestra of the Lehigh Valley and currently presents a variety of classical, pops, and family concerts. As the operator of Miller Symphony Hall, the ASA also presents a number of non-orchestra events including the Jazz Upstairs series, Metropolitan Opera: Live in HD broadcasts, Live OnStage, and a variety of other concerts.

The responsibilities associated with this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Perform as a Tenure Track member of the Allentown Symphony Orchestra -2nd Violin Section.
  • Teaching Artist with El Sistema Lehigh Valley (Program activities typically occur Mon-Fri 2:00-6:00 PM).
  • School Engagement: classroom and assembly presentations, workshops, demonstrations, string clinics.
  • Community Engagement; recitals, speech presentation, collaborations with area arts & social agencies.
  • Attend administrative meetings.

Qualified candidates:

  • must be a US citizen or have a visa to work in the United States.
  • Bachelors Degree required - Music degree preferred.
  • must be fluent in Spanish and English.
  • must be able to pass PA background checks and clearances.
  • is responsible for their own AFofM Union dues - Local 45 and ROPA dues.
  • must re-locate to the City of Allentown, PA and is responsible for their moving expenses.
  • must have valid US Driver’s License and a car.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work on a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to operate related equipment, i.e., computer, copier, sound equipment.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and be on one’s feet for extended periods of time.

Compensation: $38,000-$41,000 plus furnished studio/1 bedroom apartment. Position also comes with a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, Life, and long- and short-term disability insurance; generous paid time off; 403(B) retirement plan option, and medical/dependent care flexible spending accounts (FSAs). Housing does not include utility, food, and other living expenses.

Interview Process and Timeline

  • Complete online application by February 16, 2024
  • Preliminary Zoom interviews will be held with qualified candidates.
  • Semifinalists will be notified by March 8, 2024.
  • Up to five semi-finalists will be invited to a blind audition at Miller Symphony Hall on April 14, 2024.
  • Finalists will advance to in-person presentations and interviews on April 15-16 2024.

Note, finalists must be available on these dates to be considered.

Travel to Allentown and housing between April 14-16, 2024 provided by the ASA.

Final interview will include: (April 15-16, 2024)

  • In-person interview with selection committee.
  • Teaching Audition with El Sistema Lehigh Valley Students.
  • Classroom Performance Presentation (Elementary Level). Candidates will design their own programs.

Notification of Appointment:  May 10, 2024
